This is my first time doing this so if it seem awkward, bear with me. Let me explain. While reading my email, I came across what I am about to share with you. It drew me in quickly. So naturally I asked if I could share the email with you. Give said permission, this will be sort of a guest posting.

"Well if you feel so badly about it, you can fight me now." Kona's arrogant smile nearly incapacitated her.

Surely he was jesting?

"Fight you? I think not. I am not giving you that kind of satisfaction. " She looked over his strong male body. Too male for her, she would appreciate him from afar, but she knew better than to play with men like him--men who played with women and then tossed them aside. Kivra knew his type, the biggest warriors who were the most handsome could have any woman eating out of their hand, and they often had several women.

"Well if you won't issue the challenge then I will." He moved towards her. He stopped when he was only a breath from her. "I challenge you to a battle, Princess."

"How dare you challenge me?" Kivra curled up her lips, a nervous energy invading her body. The words still hung in the air, stinging her ears. Kivra sounded a little childish even to her own ears. The man was just goading her into making a stupid mistake, something she could not afford to do, if she were to accept such a rash offer.

She looked nervously to his waiting men. All of them warriors. All of them there to support their leader, who came here to challenge her, a woman. What kind of man would do such a thing?

Only a man with no honor.

Only a barbarian who did not care anything for treating women any different from men. She answered her own question.

In her country, women may not have the same rights as men, but they were protected. Women were known as the weaker sex, yet they were respected. Women were treated with honor and always with respect as mothers and as wives. They could never physically equal a man's physical power, and so they were never allowed any real power. Even the right to own land was not allowed to a woman.

She was still flummoxed that Kona would even consider fighting her. Even the barbarians of Kapomo had ethics, or so she had thought. This personal challenge made her question those morals. It was not like she had any males left in her family to fight for her honor or her cause.

Kapomo must be a land full of thieves and kidnappers.

"Do you accept?" He grinned down at her. They were standing on even ground, but the man towered over her by a good foot. All the warrior men of Kapomo were large men, but he seemed exceptionally large and exceptionally powerful. A muscle pulsed in his neck as he awaited her decision.

Kivra looked at him for a moment, letting her gaze trail over his well-muscled warrior body. It would be no contest. She let her fingers feel the reassurance of her sword at her hip, feeling the engraving well worn on the handle. His was a body that would soon overpower hers within minutes. But with her skill and experience, she could give him at least a little challenge. If he'd miscalculated her skills before offering the challenge, that might give her an edge against his strength. Perhaps if the fight were short, she could end it as the winner.

"Why would you challenge me?" Of course she already knew why in her heart. He wanted to usurp her power. Her father had been the Shirkan, the unquestioned leader by strength. He retired, because of age, and had not accepted a fight for years. When he died three months ago, he left her the sole survivor of the clan. No other man had dared to fight her for her leadership in her own clan. With no brothers or any other men in the family to fight for her, Kivra would have to fight for her own honor.

"Perhaps, because you have something I want..." his words may have been innocent but his eyes were insinuating something wicked. The way he let his words trail off, Kivra had guessed he had bed play on his mind, like most men. But unlike most men, he figured out she would only give herself to the strongest of the lot. She needed a man who was stronger than she; a man who had something to offer her, like himself.

"I am just trying to say that there is nothing I have to offer you." She wanted nothing more than to put an arrogant man like him in his place.

"Oh but I disagree, you have much to offer me. You will have to let me be the judge of that, Princess..." There was no doubt what he was alluding to when he stared her down with that hungry gaze. His eyes stayed far too long on her chest for her liking.

I know this is silly but I love her button! It is so pretty. When I first found her blog, I added it to my blog without ever being asked. I love her blog too. Very easy on the eyes and she gives away lots of good stuff?

Review: The Last Queen: A Novel of Juana la Loca by C W Gortner

I just finished listening to The Last Queen: A Novel of Juana la Loca by C W Gortner (unabridged). The narrator, Margarite Gavin, did an excellent job of reading the book and interpreting the characters. She has a lovely voice that makes listening easy.

This is what the publisher said about the book:

In case you didn't understand the title, she was called the "crazy" by many people. We are lead to believe that may have been mostly the based on rumors spread by her power hungry husband and his group and, after his death, furthered by her own father, whose need for power was equally as great as he wished to out shine the accomplishments of his dead wife. Was she crazy? I will let you decide.

Was she mad? As in angry? The life of strong, smart, educated women during this time of male dominance was never easy. Women were expected to be docile, marry who they were told to, and bear children (she had 5, only 2 of which for male). How does one stand up for her rights and those of her country, to be a QUEEN, in such an atmosphere?

This is a face paced, fascinating autobiographical novel, which drew me in quickly and kept me riveted to her story. Looking through her eye, you clearly see all the different characters, while feeling her reactions.

(My husband's comment: "The characters are well formed and developed. Its only flaw is that it reflects a modern woman's perspective of a vastly different time and I wonder if women 500 years ago area accurately depicted int it?)

I expect this will be one I will want to read and/or listen to again.

Sunsweet has recently released a new product called “Philippine Pineapple.” Oh let me tell you, if I could eat them for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, I would! They are so juicy and delicious and sweet! It is not shriveled or dry but actually plump and as close as you can get to a fresh chunk of pineapple. I found myself fighting with my kids over this! We ate them as a snack and I even added some to a pineapple dessert I was making!

1. A 90 year old man's dying wish in South Carolina was to be buried in his car. Link If you were told tomorrow you have 3 weeks to live, would you have any dying wishes or something special done before you died? YES, Have one hell of a wake!

2. Do you pay for more stuff using a credit/debit card or cold hard cash? UHHHHH, I refuse to answer that question with my dh so close.

3. What's cuter- a baby lizard or a baby snake? I think I will go with the lizard, they generally run away faster!

4. You go out to eat by yourself at a restaurant. While waiting for your food do you people watch & eavesdrop on others conversations, read a book, use a laptop or chat with people around you? I probably have a book....but it may be a ruse so people don't know I am eavesdropping.

5. If you see someone walking around with toilet paper stuck to their shoe, do you tell them or just laugh? NO laughing...I've been there. If I can, I will tell them. Mine was running around all day thinking that I looked cooler than anything. Only to stop by the store on the way home and seeing my reflection in the door with my slip hanging.

6. You are talking to someone you just met but you can't understand them at all because of their accent. Do you tell them you can't understand them or just smile and nod? Luckily, I have a good ear and can lip read, but I may have to ask them to slow down.

7. Mudfest! Park filled with pools of mud and an obstacle course of mud. Do you go and play in the mud? No, I prefer to show my silly/stupid side another way and NO, I am not going to tell you the way!

8. Have you ever had a headache so bad it effected your vision? Yes, the doc called it part of a "paralytic migraine" and scared the poop out of me! I thought I was having a stroke and was way too young for that!

9. Would you fit in more with the circus, Hollywood, Broadway, or comedy circuit types? According to my husband, Broadway...well, he said I should go on stage, but then he says something about one leaving?

1. My daughter (aka Demon #1) informed me the other day that her hugs were worth a million dollars. Would you give up hugs - giving and receiving - for the rest of your life, for a million dollars? No, you need hugs to grow and at 4'8", I need all the help I can get!

2.Have you ever been bitten by a member of the canine family? Of course. And who's fault has it been, MINE. Dumb girl.

3. What is your favorite color of jeans? Any shade of blue...that is the way they started and some traditions should be held sacred.

4. What is something that has changed in public schools that you wish was the norm when you were in school? Damned if I know! I got out of high school in '63 and I have no clue as to what is going on now. Although, I have heard they now have sex education which a whole bunch of kids would have been served well by when I was in Junior High and High School!

5. What is your news source? Keith Oberman and Rachel Maddow and whatever local news I pick for the night.

6. What sort of people do you think read your blog? Book bloggers, fiber folk, and a couple of artists.

7. If I told you that I had a headache, you would say..........??? Poor baby!

8. You go to a buffet style restaurant, what is the first food you put on your plate? Salad, unless the soup looks better.

9. If you were stranded on a desert island.... no, we aren't asking that again. Lets put a twist into this. Would you volunteer to be dropped off on a desert island, to be picked up in a month? And you don't get to bring those 3 items, either. NO! I don't like being sunburned and I have learned the hard way about reflected sun off the water! AND my wheelchair would run out of electricity in no time at all.

10. When the sun sets, what are you usually doing? Probably something boring.

That little devil, Book Bird Dog, tagged me! I do have a desk...in fact I have two desks that I have not seen in about 6 months as they are not wheelchair accessible. My "desk" is a side table. The laptop is on top of my "BOOK"...no, not that kind of book, it is all the stuff I need for the "tax man". Beside that is a folded piece paper work, beside that, is my c-pap on top of which are 2 pillow covers, a pillow case, a lovely photograph that needs a frame 5 books, and the medication dh picked up for me. In front of that is my cell phone, some lip gloss a business card. There are all sorts of cords between the lap top and the c-pap as well.

I am lucky that i don't have to talk about what all is on the shelf below!

I may have forgotten some i got last week but you all understand, it was a bit of a strange week at the yellow brick house.

Book Review: The Strangely Beautiful Tale of Miss Percy Parker by Leanna Renee Hieber

If you have followed me for very long, you know how antsy I was to read this book! And I am sure you want to know if it lived up to my expectations. IT DID IT DID IT DID IT DID!!! and now for my review:

The language felt right for the time with well defined characters.

The time is 1888. The place is London, England. Percy, an orphan brought up in a convent, has come to Athens Academy to further her education. Her albino coloring gives her the appearance of the one of the ghosts she sees, hears, and can talk to. While she is our main character, there are plenty of interesting others.

There is the Guard made up of Rebecca, the head mistress of the Academy. Alexi, the mathematics professor. Elijah, a Lord with great wealth, Josephine, of French extraction, owner of the establishment where the Guard meet. Michael, a man of the cloth. Jane, an Irish lass, who is a bit of a loner.

What do they guard? And Why?

There is Marianna, a fellow student from Germany who becomes Percy's best live friend.

Lucille, a beautiful, raven haired woman who seems to been in need to protection.

There is the Ripper. Is he man or something else?

Who is theSeventh? Why is the Seventh so important?

London (The Smoke) is also a character, with her well known ghosts and dark atmosphere, and darker alleys.

If you are well versed in mythology, you will love how it is woven into the story as are the Shakespherian references.

Leanna Renee Hieber, who is also a working actress, has wrapped this tale up with great dramatic effect. While she has two more books in store for the me based on these characters, I am pleased to report this one can be read as a stand alone. (I do so hate to be left dangling with floppy, sloppy ending.)

UPDATE: Book Review: Close Encounters of the Third Grade Kind by Phillip Done

Thanks to Hachette Book Group, I get to review Close Encounters of the Third-Grade Kind" by Phillip Done. The following is their description of the book:

My thoughts:

After reading a Gothic, ghostly tale and two Civil War themed books, i was having much trouble getting into a A Separate Country, another book stemming from the Civil War. That was when I picked up "Close Encounters of the Third Grade Kind" by Phillip Done.

What a joyous read for anyone who can remember being a third grader, parents of a third grader, teachers, would be teachers ….oh, just anyone who enjoys young kids. I think it was Bennet Surf that wrote the book "Never Get Personal with a Chicken" (WRONG: Don't Get Perconal with a Chicken by H. Allen Smith) who first taught me the joys of the minds of young ones. Mr. Done has done a grand job continuing that legacy. What a grand teacher he must be! I would wish him on every third grader!

I am so glad i got to read this book for all the joy it gave me. I feel lighter than air and ready to hug all teachers and read to a bunch of little kids one of my favorite children's books.

Book Review Shades of Grey by Jessica James

What drew me to the novel? The title which suggests a willingness to give the reader an unbiased view of the conflict? The cover? The fact that General Lee was from Virginia? Maybe I was influenced by my southern heritage with both parents being deeply routed there. I can only rejoice that i was drawn to the novel.

You are not taken from one blood battle to the next, rather you are taken through the war by the conflicts of two people, both Southerns, but one strongly for the rights of the stare and one strongly for keeping the states united. As they battle each other with their wits, as they dutifully do their assigned tasks to end the conflict, the reader is exposed to more of the war's complexities.

The book starts with a chase during the beginning of the war. Confederates chasing a small farmer boy on a big black charger. The Federals suddenly appear causing the Confederates to split up…except for their leader who is intent on his youthful prey.

As the reader, it was the start of a fast moving junket that did no slow down. I could see each character, hear their voices, understand their emotions.

Who do i think should read Shades of Gray? Civil War buffs. Lovers of historical fiction. History lovers. Anyone who just wants a really good read.

Book Review Stand the Storm by Breena Clarke

I must thank Hachette first for letting me review this book!

This is the story of Sewing Annie who is put under the tutelage of Knitting Annie to learn her skills on the Ridley Plantation. When Knitting Annie dies, Sewing Annie takes up the the black smith by whom she has a boy, Gabriel, and a girl, Ellen. By teaching them her skills, she hopes to save her children from the fields. At 10, Gabriel is sent to Washington DC to apprentice to a tailor. The tailor moves on after selling the shop to the Master. The Master's nephew is put in charge of the store with Gabriel, Sewing Annie, and Ellen running the business.

This is the story of the strength and love of family from before and through the Civil War and after. It is heartwarming and gut wrenching and well worth the read.

The rhythm of the language threw me for a bit from time to time but did not stop me wanting to find out what would happen to this family.

I could feel most of the characters and understand their motivations and enjoyed their growth. The novel is portal into time period well known but from a different vantage. It is so well worth the read.

houston, we have power

yes, i'm back. i know, it was only supposed to take a couple of days BUT when the electric company does not show up between 8 and 8:30 like they said that they would and it takes 5 phone calls to get someone who will respond so you don't get the power off until after 5, you know this portends of things to come. ..and it did.

i did tell you that we decided the guys that wired this house were drunk and on drugs? from what dh told me, i think they shared some with the inspector! besides things being wired incorrectly, they weren't up to code. i mean they weren't up to code when the house was built.

oh, and it wasn't grounded.

and if getting the power turned off was a pain, getting it turned back on was just about as easy. talk about left hands and right hands not talking! we were cleared to have the power turned on before lunch...it took lots of phone calls to get it turned back on...after 5pm mind you. AND i got a call this morning to see if we were ready to have it turned back on.

but everything seems about right now and i have computer access so i am a happy camper....well, except for over 2000 emails!

but i have most of that fixed.
