Even though former slaves Annie Coats and her son Gabriel have managed to buy their freedom, their lives are still marked by constant struggle and sacrifice--to the extent that Annie secretly recalls her days on the plantation with fondness. Washington's Georgetown neighborhood, where the Coatses are seeking to build their new lives--with Gabriel, a tailor, producing uniforms for soldiers and fine suits for pompous politicians, and Annie, a seamstress and laundress, catering to the nearby brothels and stately homes--is supposed to be a safe haven, a "promised land" for former slaves, but is effectively a frontier town, gritty and dangerous, with no laws protecting black people. In fact, the city's own emancipation efforts in 1862 serve only to compromise the Coats family's status, putting Gabriel's three young daughters (each of them born free of free parents) at risk of becoming the property of the Coatses' former master. i can't wait for my copy to arrive! after i read it. i have to put in my two cents after reading. i want everyone to have a shelf of "to be read" as big as mine or bigger.

CHOCOLATE COVERED STRAWBERRY SOAP

i just got my soap! before i could even open the mailer envelope, i would smell it...think sudden salivation and hunger pain along with a sudden desire for chocolate! out comes a bubble wrapped package. the scent is stronger, as are the desires for chocolate covered cherries. off with the bubble wrap. now we have a sweetly covered yellow tissue paper wrapped package tied up with hemp... that's twine for the unknowedged. i pulled the bow string and there, encased in a wee bag tied up with a bit more twine is what you see above! i'm so hungry for chocolate and strawberries, i could almost (well, i did say "almost") eat the bar instead of taking a bath with it! guys, i really think i will have to visit this amy again for more soap...but this time no foody smells...too hard for the brain to dissociate!

UPDATE: the package arrived. i immediately had to try one. it was love a first crunch! i had to use self restraint to keep from eatting all 3 right then and there. but i did and over the next 3 days thy were gone.

which one did i like the best? sorry folks. i just can't say. i loved them all! but then you have to understand, i love fruit! i loved the crunchiness and the different flavors. and one other silly point, you know how sometimes dried fruit will stick in your teeth? my lovely gift didn't. (told you it was silly.) will i buy this now that i have tired it? you bet! and in all 4 flavors!!!

this is so cool! why? because i like "dried fruit" but have found out that with i pig out on regular dried fruit, i end up with a tummy ack as they rehydrate in my tummy. with freeze dried fruit, i do not have the same problem. so i thank val (who has great giveaways! lots of variety (like books too))! o, if you want to have a chance to win one of her giveaway go give val a try at sweeps 4 bloggers.

i won some weleda skin food

I am also constantly battling dry skin on my face. I don't tend to breakout much but the constant scratching of my forehead is a little bothersome at times. Weleda offers a product named Skin Food which I really enjoy. It's great for hands, feet, knees and elbows. If you suffer from dry skin anywhere on your body this is the answer.
