no poo challenge update from dk mommy spot

Eureka! My Personal No ‘Poo Challenge Update

Thou Mayest Have Tresses Like Unto Mine

Thou Mayest Have Tresses Like Unto Mine

So this is what happened: We decided on a trip to the beach last week on a sweltering day. Seems everyone else did too, because the beach was crowded and so was the water. Imagine hundreds of people coated in non-biodegradable sunscreen filing in and out of the lake all day long. I didn’t notice it at first, but at the right angle you could see what looked like a mini Exxon Valdez oil spill floating on the surface of the water. I didn’t notice it until after I’d submerged my head in the goo. When we realized we were all feeling a bit slippery for a dip in a freshwater lake, I knew my hair would need a serious scrubbing. So when we got home I decided to try the baking soda scrub followed by a cider vinegar final rinse.

Oh my GOSH.

You know I don’t type in all caps, but…

OH MY GOSH!

Now I know what makes the whole “No ‘Poo” thing such a big deal. What I assumed would turn my hair into a tangled dry mess, what I assumed would be an unpleasant gritty experience, actually turned out to be the best-kept natural beauty secret I’ve ever blabbed on the internet. Yes, the baking soda scrub is gritty as all get out, and yes it feels a little weird initially, but it rinses out very well. And if I just put the recommended tablespoon or two of cider vinegar in a mug of cold water, dump in on my head at the very end without rinsing it back out, I have the most amazing hair of my life. No, I don’t smell like Thousand Island dressing, but the shine is about blinding.

I’ve been doing this treatment every day for about a week now and my hair improves by the day. At first I lost some of the new curl I’d gained, but it has returned and in a much shinier version. Still no tangles to contend with, no need for conditioners. My hair has become softer with some natural highlights coming into play. Cider vinegar does give you reddish highlights over the long term which actually works well for me, so I’m happy.

I see now why some super models and famous hair stylists recommend no ‘poo. I get it. I really get it now. I don’t know how the adjustment would have been if I’d started out with baking soda and vinegar rinses right from the start, but I have a feeling it would have made things a little easier. People who have done this treatment much longer than I have say there’s still an adjustment period of one to three months, even longer sometimes. But now I can say with confidence, and in all caps, IT’S WORTH IT!!!

Read all my articles on my No ‘Poo Personal Challenge here.

i love this story. i am following it closely as you can tell. (and thinking.) i do wonder if this has the same effect on all hair types. go visit dk mommy spot (she has giveaways too.).

YARN STORMING

the following is lifted directly from shepherd susie's blog. follow on her site.

A few weeks ago I had a yarn giveaway on this blog. To enter, readers leave a comment telling me why they should win. I thought it would be fun to see what silly reasons people gave, but the entries damn-near broke my heart.

I got lots and lots of comments from knitters who’d been out of work for months, laid off due to the state of the economy. Others were in college or grad school and just couldn’t afford yarn and text books. One or two were single moms trying to hold it all together.

To a knitter, there is nothing worse than not having yarn. Wait, that’s not true. The death of a loved one is worse. Eviction is worse. Not knowing how your going to feed your kid is worse. But knitting is a small comfort that can help make all those other things slightly more bearable.

I had a seed of an idea and I took it to my ravelry group to see what they thought. As always, I was humbled by their generosity and kindness. As a group, we came up with Yarn Storming.

3634514278_876664efd4

We’re collecting un-wanted stash yarn and sending it out anonymously to people who can use it. Shareholder Nancy Pope has graciously agreed to organize this project. (Nancy and her family are very dear to me; they are very positive and always willing to pitch in and help. I wish they were my next-door neighbors. In fact, I wish they were everybody’s next-door-neighbors. The world needs a whole lot more of them.)

Secret Agent Nancy is also collecting names (and addresses if you have them) of people you think could use a little yarn love in their mailbox. If you don’t have an address but you have an email, Nancy will email the person on some pretext and get their mailing address.

Along with the yarn, the recipient will receive the ridiculously awesome yarn storming logo above, created by our dear Secret Agent Lisa. (The world needs more Lisas, too.)

If you’d like to become a Yarn Storming Secret Agent, send an email to yarnstorming AT fiberfarm DOT com. If you have stash you’d like to donate to brighten someone’s day, just ask Special Agent Nancy for the mailing address to send it to. Use the same address to submit the name of someone who needs Yarn Storming.

EDITED TO ADD: Yarn Storming now has a ravelry group of it’s very own!

P.S. Spinners are included in this project. Please feel free to donate spinning stash and to nominate spinners as well.

P.P.S As this project grows, we’ll be needing more help to keep it organized. If you’d like to volunteer just shoot us an email at the address above.

There is not a strong odor so men would really be able to use this as well. It contains fatty acids, vitamin E, and organic sunflower seed oil. Question of the day

If you had 5000 dollars to give away or donate to a charity...explain what you would do with it and why?

there are so many charities for so many thing that are all good and nobel and deserving of my support. that said, if i had that much money to donate, i think i would donate it aspca via my vet's office.

money is so tight today. people who dearly love their critters are having to give them up. feeding themselves and/or families, has to be priority one. this has resulted in more animals being put into shelters. those animals need support until they can be adopted. when the economy picks up, people will want to replace the animals had to give away.

why via my vet's office? i know he will make sure it get into the right hands.

i am a winner

virgin coconut oil

vco

This is what MomStart had to say when she got the sample and cookbook...says it is a winner!y Story with Virgin Coconut Oil.

Tropical Traditions sent me a jar of virgin coconut oil. I have had time to use it in a recipe of my own, but they did also provide me with a book of recipes and information about Virgin Coconut Oil. I haven’t even begun to delve into the book but I will tell you about my cooking experience.

I like to make a recipe called Chicken Curry and Coos Coos. We usually use Coconut milk but I was out and I had this jar of Coconut Oil. My husband had already put the idea in my head so I proceeded to use the oil.

when your blog roller stops, hang in there

there are a limited number of buttons you can up into a roller before it stops. and it might even screw up the button behind where you input the new button code/text.

so i now have 3 rollers. the top 2 are constistent giveaway buttons (ga). the 3rd button is for estsy buttons, yarn buttons, and recipe buttons.

i like the buttons because i can get to them faster (as can ga bloggers who want to get to them too). and i think it makes the blog cleaner.

knitting jewelry?

kintters love dual purpose jewelry. a ravelry friend introduced me a new piece via a give away (no, i did not win). leslie wind is a knitter, a crocheter, and a maker of great jewelry!

but i had to show it to you. isn't i beautiful? this is it:

Cable Needle Necklaces™

The Heart Cable Needle Necklace™ measure about 2" high by about 2 1/2 wide. The sterling heart is slightly less than an inch including the loop for hanging.

The Sheep and The Cat measure aprox. 2" long X 2 1/2" wide. The sheep and cat are sterling and cut out by hand so each is unique. The needle is bronze and is between a #2 and #3 size due to the hammering.

Engraving of a short message on the back is free. Each Cable Needle Necklace™ comes with its own silk pouch and a 36" black leather cord.

i love this...and if you want to give me a present... (how's that for a subtle hint). i promise to do nothing that does not have cables in it!

so where can you find it? here
